Holly's photo appeared in an article about Welsh Springer Spaniels in the new issue of Gun Dog Magazine (Vol. 30, #1, Dec 2010-Feb 2011). Holly had just turned 12 months old and still looked like a puppy. You might not guess that she had just climbed out of the pool in our back yard.

Holly competed at the Queensboro Kennel Club shows on October 30-31 and took Winners Bitch for one point each day. With 8 points and a major win, she's just over half-way to her championship.

Holly got back in the ring with me after a break for several months and took Winners Bitch for 1 point today at the Northwest Connecticut Dog Club show, from the Bred-by-Exhibitor class. Pictures will be posted soon.
Elena won her Novice A class with a score of 99 out of 100 in our very first rally trial as well. This gives her the first "leg" of three needed for the Rally Novice title. She got a first place blue ribbon, a green qualifying ribbon, and a bag of goodies. Who says 9-year-old dogs can't learn new tricks?

News about Harper arrived today, along with pictures of her celebrating her second birthday, and waiting at the window to go to the beach when the family was on vacation on Cape Cod. Jeremy reports that Harper is "one of the most laid-back and accommodating dogs I have ever seen." She's quiet around the house, and they've been trying, without success, to teach her an alarm bark. She plays "hunt and fetch" almost daily with balls, frisbees, and dummies, and gets frequent compliments on her retrieving abilities. She also has a strong prey drive and chases everything from chipmunks to squirrels to wild turkeys. We think she's a real cutie, and not just because she looks so much like her mother, Mika. I can see a little of her brother, Tucson, in her face and expression, too.

Elena and I competed in our first Rally Obedience match today! I was nervous, and Elena did a little too much sniffing, but she was first in her Novice A class of 4, with a score of 94 out of a 100. I was very proud of her, and she was happy with the stuffed squeaky toy that she won. She's entered in her first real trial next month, so I've got to get busy with practicing.

Today we received thyroid results for Mika and Holly. Both are OFA normal. Official results will be posted on the OFA website soon.
CERF results for Holly and Mika are now available on the Canine Eye Registration Foundation website. To see their official records, click on "CERF Certification Online Verification," then search for each dog's registered name: Destiny's Hershey's Kisses and Daytime Destiny's Red Moon.

Holly had her hips and elbows x-rayed for OFA certification at an OFA clinic in Suffield, Connecticut, at the office of Dr. Anne Huntington. Dr. Anne said that the hips look at least OFA Good and that elbows appeared normal. Nothing's official of course, but it's good to hear.

Yesterday I took Mika and Holly to an OFA clinic for CERF (eye) exams and thyroid tests. (The clinic was held in Bethel, CT, sponsored by the Newtown Kennel Club.) These tests are among the first steps in determining whether Holly will be a suitable candidate for breeding, after she finishes her championship.
Both dogs received their CERF clearances, although they each had a minor anomaly. Holly has a single iris-to-iris PPM (persistent pupillary membrane), and Mika has a small punctate cataract, which the opthalmologist said every dog gets if it lives long enough. Neither feature affects vision in any way.
The blood drawn for the thyroid tests will be sent to the OFA-approved lab at Michigan State University.
CERF results will be available on the CERF website in a few weeks; both CERF and thyroid results will be on the OFA website as well.

On Sunday I took Elena and Holly to eastern CT and joined some friends with their Welsh Springers for an introductory day of field work, sponsored by the New England Sporting Group Association. All of the dogs enjoyed themselves and showed an innate instinct for birds. Elena and Holly are pictured at the far right.

Below is a portrait of our beloved Elena, taken just after we celebrated her 9th birthday on June 12. See more photos of Elena in the photo gallery.

March 28, 2010 - We have more new photos of Max with two of his buddies. Thanks for sending them, Kathy!
Max checks out his friend Bubba's leg.

Holly goes to dog daycare at K9Etiquette in South Hadley every Thursday. The Cavalier King Charles puppies want Holly to play with them, while Holly likes the pitbull mix, Missy.

January 25, 2010 - The new year has brought photos of puppies from the Mika-Bart litter - they are now 5 years old.
Kathy sent pictures of Max, Destiny's Winter Moon, having fun in the snow. He looks a lot like his brother Charlie.

A big thank you to Bucky's owner Bart (not Bart the sire!) for this 2009 photo of Bucky - Destiny's Moon Stone.
And another big thanks to Peggy for these photos taken last summer of Emmy. Of the seven puppies in this litter, Emmy looks the most like their sire, Bart. I love the soft eyes and expression that they share.
